In Commemoration of International Women’s day Women around the world commemorate International Women’s Day on March 8 in remembrance of their struggle for equality, justice and peace. March 8th is also a day for women to plan and prioritize their continuous struggle for a better world in which their rights are respected and their voices heard. Ethiopian women commemorate March 8 in this spirit.

The Ethiopian Women for Peace and Development (EWPD) has planned two activities in commemorating International Women’s month:

1) On March 8th, International Women’s Day, Ethiopian Women for Peace and Development members and our supporters will hold our annual candle light vigil in front of the White House in support of women who are struggling for peace and justice in Ethiopia. The vigil starts at 6:00 p.m. Please join us at the candle light vigil.

2) On March 10th, we are honoring six Ethiopian women immigrants in the Washington Metropolitan area who are successful in their line of work and also have contributed to the Ethiopian community. Please join us in honoring these women. The honoring ceremony will take place on March 10, 2007 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The address is Gwendolyn Coffield Community Center, 2450 Lyttonsville Road Silver Spring, MD 20910. There is no entrance fee.
